GlasClay™ is glass.... but not exactly glass as you
may know it. Ceramic artists will feel a kinship to this new medium, but
remember.... it is GLASS, not ceramic. You can produce
your work with a matte finish, shiny finish, and glossy finish....
depending on the number of times fired, and the firing schedule. Think out of
the box. Structural Opaque GlasClay™ and Non Structural Translucent & Opal GlasClay™ are both available now. For a short time you can order online with this website, directly from us, the manufacturer. It will be available in several weeks through our manufacturer's direct source in 2011.
GlasClay™ is sold in a powder form, to mix when you are
ready.
Shake well, put on a HEPA particulate mask for
mixing, pour the desired amount into a small glass bowl, add distilled water
(tap water is ok, but distilled water guarantees no color distortion from
minerals in the tap water) and mix. Apply a small amount of olive oil to your
hands and knead for several minutes. After conditioning, create to your
heart's content. Fresh, pliable GlasClay™, when you want
it! For an even better performing product, mix a day ahead, refrigerate
in an airtight container, knead again to re-condition and use! You can keep it
in your refrigerator for several weeks.
Structural Opaque GlasClay™ is fired between 1225 F and 1330 F. It allows you to shape your creations, into solid, high relief, hollow or 3 dimensional pieces. It may be rolled flat and placed into an oiled RTV mold, dried and fired with no mold in the kiln....allowing an artist to make multiple pieces that may be fired at the same time.
Warm Glass
artists have been long been bound by flat work. Not anymore! It is
hard to imagine glass that is free standing and 3 dimensional yet can
be fired in a kiln without a mold. Sculptors can create multi-colored pieces,
either hollow or solid, large or small. Carvers can form a block out of Structural
Opaque GlasClay™, allow it to dry, and then carve it and embellish the
piece with additional colors of freshly mixed material. The piece can then be
fired after drying.
Non-Structural Translucent & Opal GlasClay™ lets you create flat, stained glass-like art, without cutting hard glass. Mix, roll out to your desired thickness, cut your desired shapes with a plastic knife or even a cookie cutter, and create a large or small design. Use the translucent and opal colors to form an intricate picture. Allow to dry completely,
then fire in a kiln following the recommended ramping and holding
temperatures. Multiple firings can develop
different effects. After firing a round piece, it may be slumped into a bowl mold to create a stained glass like container.
Finished pieces of Structural Opaque GlasClay™will tack fuse to sheet glass of the same COE at
about 1220 F. It may also be tack fused to finished pieces of Translucent & Opal GlasClay™.
